Amazon will be investing in developing 100 MW of geothermal power generation for its data centres in Nevada, supplied by Zanskar through NV Energy.

Amazon has announced that it will be investing in building 100 MW of geothermal power generation to supply its data centre operations in the Reno area in Nevada. The company will be working utility company NV Energy, with whom Zanskar had just recently signed a 20-year 100-MW Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The PPA is yet to be finalized pending the approval of NV Energy’s 2026 Integrated Resource Plan filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada.

According to the statement from Amazon, the company will be covering all costs associated with any new energy infrastructure to power its data centres to ensure that these costs are not passed on to residents and businesses in the region. The geothermal deal is part of a larger energy supply plan that includes 600 MW of solar power generation and another 600 MW of battery storage.

Amazon described geothermal as a particularly exciting addition to their carbon-free energy portfolio as it is a renewable energy source that does not fluctuate according to weather. This will be Amazon’s first data centre powered in part by geothermal energy, and Amazon sees significant potential for geothermal to scale.

“Geothermal is one of the few energy sources uniquely positioned to deliver affordable, around-the-clock power. Not only can it deliver reliable, carbon-free power with existing technologies, but it’s also uniquely suited to scale and meet growing electrical needs for years to come,” said Ryan McGraw, Chief Development Officer of Zanskar.

“This agreement marks a significant step in scaling our portfolio further, and we’re grateful to be working alongside NV Energy to meet the moment to provide carbon-free power at a time of high demand.”

Following the discovery of new geothermal sites in the past year, Zanskar has started 2026 strong with the closing of a $115 million Series C funding round and another $40 million development capital funding, as well as the signing of a GEODE agreement with community aggregator CC Power.
