Construction work has officially started for the 55-MW Dieng Unit 2 geothermal power plant by PT Geo Dipa in Central Java, Indonesia.

PT Geo Dipa Energi (Geo Dipa) has officially started construction of the Dieng Unit 2 geothermal power plant in Central Java, Indonesia. When completed, the Unit 2 power plant will expand the installed power generation capacity of the Dieng geothermal field to 120 MW. The company has set a target for the the start of operations of Dieng Unit 2 by 2028.

The initial kick-off for the work on both the Dieng Unit 2 and Patuha Unit 2 geothermal power plants was held back in 2019. According to Geo Dipa President Director Yudistian Yunis, the company had allocated an investment of USD 350 million for the project. This investment went towards the drilling of around 10 new geothermal wells and the construction of the power plant. Before the end of 2025, Geo Dipa secured a USD 180 million loan from the Asian Development Bank to support the capacity expansion efforts in both the Dieng and Patuha geothermal fields.

The EPC contract for the Dieng 2 power plant was awarded to a joint venture of PT Rekayasa Engineering (PTRE) and PT Timas Suplindo in 2025.

“With a capacity of 55 MW, and targeted for operation in 2028, this project will increase the supply of reliable, clean electricity while strengthening geothermal’s role as a backbone of national energy security,” said Yudistian Yunis.

Wonosobo Regency Regional Secretary One Andang Wardoyo is also optimistic that the geothermal project will provide economic benefits to the local communities through new jobs and more opportunities for local businesses. Beyond these economic benefits, Andang hopes that the construction and operations will prioritize principles of sustainability, workplace safety, environmental partnerships, and harmonious partnerships with the community.
