Aargau utility to invest in Haute-Sorne geothermal project in Switzerland
AEW Energie, the energy company owned by the Canton of Aargau, has announced the intent to invest in the Haute-Sorne geothermal project in Jura, Switzerland.
The energy company AEW Energie AG, which is wholly owned by the Canton of Aargau, has announced its intention to invest in Geo-Energie Jura, the company developing the Haute-Sorne deep geothermal project in the Jura, Switzerland. The company now joins Geo Energie Suisse, as well as energy suppliers from Basel-Landschaft, Bern, and Zurich with their involvement in the project.
The investment is subject to formal approval by the relevant bodies and authorities.
The Haute-Sorne geothermal project, as we have extensively covered in past years, envisions a 5-MW geothermal power plant to go online by 2029. The project team has so far completed the drilling of a 4000-meter well. Stimulation tests have also been done on the well, and the results have been positive with no seismic events exceeding the pre-determined thresholds.
The Jura authorities are currently in the process of reviewing the documents related to the exploratory phase of the project before giving the approval for its continuation.
The Canton of Aargau has also demonstrated support for geothermal, recently releasing an online “geothermal suitability map” to promote geothermal development in the region. According to the statement by AEW Energie, the company recognizes the opportunities offered by deep geothermal energy and is considering implementing the technology in its own service area to supply the population with power and/or heat.
