France is experiencing a growth in geothermal development, in the form of district heating which had not been developed since it took off in the 1980's.

In a very interesting article from Bloomberg, the news organization provides a thorough look on the development of low-energy geothermal installations and district heating in the French capital.

According to Bloomberg, there is now a new push to develop geothermal in France, following sticter and more renewable friendly legislation coming from the EU.

“Energy Minister Segolene Royal is promoting geothermal in France and plans to visit a site near Villejuif this month. The energy got a boost after the ban on hydraulic fracturing technology, known as fracking.” said the same source.

The Government wants to see a “Renaissance” of geothermal and it is issuing state subsidies and “30 million euros ($40 million USD) in investment into Semhach’s plant”

This is a considerable push since France has traditionally favoured nuclear power above all other energy sources and geothermal has seen a significant growth since 2008, mostly by expanding the existing geothermal district heating systems that were already in place.
