Bolivian president pushes renewable energy policy looking at geothermal, wind and others

Bolivian President Evo Morales, said that is necessary to work on a new energy policy that allows finding new sources of energy to be developed.

The head of state stressed the importance of the so-called Patriot Agenda, which includes several important areas, including oil, energy, mining and electricity.

Geothermal energy plays a big role for Mr Morales, as he mentioned that the first plant will be built in the department of Potosí, with assistance from Japan and Costa Rica, as well as a windpower project, to generate about 50MW.

According to indigenous leader, domestic demand is still small although it grew from 700 to 1200MW in the nine years he has been in government. If the trend continues, the government will need to develop new energy projects sooner rather than later. During the campaign for the elections in October 2014, Morales stressed the need to turn Bolivia into energy center of South America and his ambition to foster renewables for a green energy revolution in the country.
