The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) has hired Dr. John W. Lund as a consultant on the “Direct Use Applications and Opportunities in Canada” report to define the direct use opportunities in Canada.

The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) has hired Dr. John W. Lund as a consultant on the “Direct Use Applications and Opportunities in Canada” report. The report is Canada’s first attempt to define the direct use opportunities that exist in a country with sizeable geothermal resource potential.

Dr. Lund is the co-founder of the Geo-heat Center at the Oregon Institute of Technology, and the former president of the Geothermal Resources Council and the International Geothermal Association. He has authored numerous papers on geothermal direct use and publishes the “World-wide Direct Uses of Geothermal Energy” Overview every five years. He is considered to be the foremost authority on the subject of geothermal direct use and has consulted on similar projects for various countries, the latest being Kenya.

Along with Dr. Alan Jessop, the former head of the geothermal energy research initiative at the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC), Dr. Lund will outline possible direct use opportunities and applications in Canada and create methodologies on how to identify and implement direct use projects. The latter task is of particular importance due to the value it presents for the many nations who like Canada, have the geothermal resources but lack the knowledge to proceed with direct use projects.

Dr. Lund’s involvement on the “Direct Use Applications and Opportunities in Canada” report is being funded by the International Energy Agency’s Geothermal Implementing Agreement of which CanGEA’s Chair is on the Executive Committee. The report itself is part of the larger Canadian Geothermal Energy Industry Technology Roadmap and Implementation Plan and is scheduled to be completed by March 2014, in time for the CanGEA Conference and accompanying workshops which are being held in Calgary between March 26th-March 28th, 2014.
