Geothermal development and knowledge transfer can turn out to be a win win for Caribbean countries.

Geothermal development in the Caribbean has been going at different speeds, depending on the country or the region. Many of these countries are in need of a cheap, local and preferably renewable energy source to feed their grids.

Geothermal energy being all of the above can provide a great advantage. A local newspaper points quotes officials from the World Bank in a recent IRENA conference stating that the best advice for caribbean countries is to collaborate and learn from each other and prevent falling in the same mistakes in geothermal project development. The news source states that: “Pointing to Dominica as an example, the World Bank official said geothermal energy “could be a complete game changer” for the country if a proposed export project works, “because (geothermal energy is) basically an export commodity now”.”

The great potential that lies untapped for geothermal in these countries could be addressed faster with the right knowledge transfer and avoiding making similar mistakes across different countries. By kick-staring geothermal, more economic development can happen and raise the standard of living.
