Chinese company to start early work on Vranjska Banja geothermal project in Serbia

A Chinese company will be starting some early exploration work on a geothermal project in Vranjska Banja in southern Serbia.
Having reported on the Vranjska Banja geothermal project before, it now seems the project takes another turn. The city of Vranjska is located in the south of Serbia, featuring a spa resort. The project being discussed would see the development of a geothermal power and heating plant. The power plant as planned would have a power generation capacity of 39 MW and the heating plant a capacity of 20 MW.
Now it seems like local company Betec Resources d.o.o., founded by Beijing Exploration Technology and Engineering Co. Ltd. from China, will initiate research on the project next month in the municipality of Vranjska Banja.
The probes will encompass 150 square kilometres. The project itself will be conducted in accordance to environmental protection regulations, according to the report released after the meeting of executive director of Betec Resources Zhao Jinshui and mayor of Vranje Slobodan Milenkovi?. According to the head of the local authority, the city will provide all logistic support.
Vranje is also interested in building a district heating system, especially for industrial facilities, in order to cut production expenses.
There has been a Canadian company, Reservoir Capital, that was holding an exploration license in the region. It is not clear if the company would be part of the development, or if it is a different location.
