Heating and cooling of the Australian War Memorial will be supplied by a closed-loop underground geothermal system - the largest of its kind in Australia.

Sydney-based GeoExchange Australia has designed a pioneering closed-loop underground geothermal system that will provide heating and cooling for the Australian War Memorial. When completed, it will be one of the largest geothermal installations of its type.

Up to 128 kilometers of pipe will be installed from 320 vertical closed-loop boreholes drilled up to 150 meters deep. The system, called the Geothermal Heat Exchange (GHX), is designed to offer 40% more energy efficiency compared to other geothermal systems. The system will reduce the Memorial’s energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.

“The Australian War Memorial is an iconic national institution, commemorating those who secured our future. So it’s fitting that this institution now leads the way in securing our energy future.” said Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh.

“The Australian War Memorial is an iconic national institution, commemorating those who secured our future. So it’s fitting that this institution now leads the way in securing our energy future,” added Keogh. “In a place that commemorates the past, this project firmly places the Australian War Memorial as a world-class building of the future.”
