The local community is to profit from the operation of the Bouillante geothermal power plant on Guadeloupe, due to new royalties to be paid by the operators to the municipality.

Reported locally, the community of Bouillante on Guadeloupe, a French territory in the Caribbean will profit from the operations of the Bouillante geothermal power plant.

A new tax scheme has been introduced that will provide royalties of EUR 180,000 (around USD 200k) to the community. These taxes are the first since the begin of operation of the plant in 1986.

The 15 MW geothermal power plant of Bouillante was acquired by US-headquartered Ormat Technologies in 2016. Since the start of operation, the plant has not been bound to local taxes and fees, which now has changed.

Following years of debate, the new flat-rate taxation on network companies or is now included in the General Tax Code. According to estimates, it should bring in around EUR 180,000 (USD 200,000) to the municipality of Bouillnate and EUR 120,000 to the Regional Council (based on a 60/40 distribution rule).

With that potential new geothermal development could see a more positive reception in other communities in Guadeloupe.
