Contracts have been signed for the construction and supervision of the district heating network in Szaflary, Poland which will eventually be supplied with geothermal heat from the Banska PGP-4 well. The first section of the district heating network will connect at least 80 homes and buildings, and the construction work will take place from 2026-2027.
An earlier update had indicated that construction of the main pipeline from the PGP-4 well in Banska Nizna to Szaflary is already in its advanced stages and will be completed within the year. The local heat network in Szaflary will serve to connect individual houses and buildings to this main supply line.
The contracts were awarded to local contractors. The construction contract, with a value of PLN 10.7 million, was assigned to TPB LUKASZCZYK SP. K. from Szaflary. Nowy Targ-based PRACOWNIA INZYNIERII DROGOWEJ Piotr Kowalczyky was then assigned as supervisor for the entire project, under a PLN 400,000 contract. The local government notes that small-diameter pipes and trenchless drilling will be used for the construction of the heating network, resulting in much less road disruption.
Additional work will also be needed at the PGP-4 well before heat supply can start. During testing, it was determined that wellbore deformation has caused constriction of its diameter at a significant depth. Thus, the contract will need to re-enter the well to do the necessary remediation. Moreover, documentation of test results and approval from the relevant authorities will still be needed before the well can be utilized.
The Banska PGP-4 well was drilled to 6103 meters depth, making it one of the deepest geothermal wells in the world, although it missed its original 7000-meter target depth. Testing indicated that the thermal waters had temperatures of around 120 °C, flowrates of up to 400 cubic meters per hour, and low mineralization. Electricity generation from the PGP-4 well is also being considered.
