AFK Geothermie has signed the drilling contracts for its second deep geothermal doublet with drilling company Daldrup & Söhne AG following a Europe-wide tender. Construction of the drilling site is expected to begin over the summer holidays with start of drilling operations targeted by November 2026.
AFK Geothermie is an inter-municipality geothermal heating company founded in 2008 by the communities of Aschheim, Feldkirchen, and Kirchheim in Eastern Munich. It is currently supplying 1600 customers across all three communities with geothermal heat. Its current heating network has already reached its full capacity, prompting plans to drill a second doublet and construct a second geothermal heating plant.
Incidentally, Daldrup & Söhne also drilled the company’s first geothermal doublet in Aschheim back in 2008.
“We are delighted to have been commissioned again by AFK, having already completed the first geothermal doublet with two deep boreholes in Aschheim in 2008 and 2009. With the now planned boreholes, we are continuing our successful collaboration with AFK,” said Bernd Daldrup, CEO of Daldrup & Söhne AG.
The new production well (TH3) will tap into thermal waters with temperatures of about 89 °C from a depth of around 2700 meters. This thermal water will then go through plate heat exchangers in the Aschheim energy center, thus supplying heat to the heating network that is connected to the municipalities. The cooled thermal water is then reinjected to the ground through reinjection well TH4.
With a second deep geothermal heating plant, AFK Geothermie will be able to supply 90 to 100% of the region’s heat demand with geothermal energy. The extension of the heating network will also allow new connections to up to 1200 additional households and businesses.
