Drilling for the Garching geothermal power project in Bavaria, Germany will be starting in April 2018, according to developer Silenos, and a possible start of operation of the planned plant in 2020.

As reported locally, the developer of the Garching geothermal project announces that drilling work is scheduled to start at the end of April 2018. Then it will become clear whether the planners of Silenos Energy GmbH have correctly estimated the conditions at 3,600 meters depth.

The set up of the drill pad is largely finished, said managing director Oliver Friedländer in a local council meeting. The company is currenlty setting up noise barriers, which are 11 meters high. Following this, RAG – partner in the project – will move its own drilling rig to the site.

As the drilling rig is currently still in operation on another site, which has lead to slight delays. The drilling rig will be very visible with a height of about 40 meters.

Starting at the end of April, the two wells be drilled in around-the-clock operation. Friedländer assumes that 50 to 200 meters are possible per day, depending on the soil conditions. The target depth for the wells lies at about 3,600 meters. Silenos specialists have planned a drilling time of three months for each well. This is followed by two-week tests in which the hot water is pumped into already completed pools. If everything goes smoothly, then Friedländer wants to start building the power plant in early 2019. By the middle of 2020, everything could be finished and power generation can be started.
