Drilling is underway for Armenia's first geothermal project with an expectation for the development of a 30 MW geothermal power plant.

As reported from Armenia, drilling has started for a geothermal project in Karkar community of Armenia’s Syunik province, the first-of-its-kind plant in the country.

If drilling confirms the estimates of geothermal surveys and approvals are given,  the construction of a 30 MW geothermal plant could start.

The drilling works are co-financed by the Climate Investment Fund and the government which have provided $9 million and $2 million, respectively. Three wells with a depth of 1500 meters each will be drilled. A final assessment of the geothermal resource will then be possible.

It is then expected that an international tender will be issued to find investors for the development of the power plant with a priority for the lowest price offering.

The project has an estimated investment volume of around USD 100 million.
