The 2nd Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit is set to come back this year on 20 September to bring together geothermal experts in Budapest, Hungary. Organized under Hungary’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, the prestigious event will receive special attention as it convenes global leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and researchers to discuss the future of the geothermal sector.

The Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit is a unique event dedicated to advancing discussions on geothermal energy development. The event was organised last year for the first time to connect the different segments of the industry and strengthen the cooperation between the stakeholders of the geothermal sector. Based on the success of last year’s event, the Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit will be organised this year again on 20 September, in Hotel Kempinski Budapest.

The summit will kick off with an opening address by Csaba Lantos, Minister of Energy of Hungary, setting the stage for insightful discussions on geothermal energy development. Hungary aims to double the amount of geothermal energy in its energy use by 2030 and the government is offering a comprehensive strategy to achieve this goal. The Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit will provide an overview of the potential of geothermal energy in Hungary and the government policies and regulations supporting the sector’s development.

The Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit is supported by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC), which drives the EU’s geothermal innovation, policy and development. EGEC’s President, Miklós Antics and Head of Policy, Sanjeev Kumar will attend the event offering valuable insights into the European context of deployment and investment in geothermal energy.

Industry leaders will lead discussions on the role of geothermal energy in driving sustainable energy solutions forward. Hungary’s MVM Group aims to build a 2 GW renewable portfolio in Hungary by 2030 and this also includes the expansion of geothermal energy capacities. MVM’s CEO Károly Mátrai will share the company’s targets related to geothermal development at the conference.

The event will also showcase best practices from the region and beyond, featuring case studies, lessons learned, and challenges overcome in the field of geothermal energy. Gad Shoshan, International Sales and Marketing Director of Ormat will present at the Budapest Geothermal Energy Summit, the company’s approach to developing a geothermal power plant, and to building a market.

Eirikur Bragason, Chief Operating Officer of Arctic Green, which develops or operates more than 1,000 geothermal projects across Asia and Europe will speak about opportunities, financing models and the company’s project development experiences.

Representing the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency, Martina Tuschl and Ljiljana Zornjak will provide insights into Croatia’s geothermal energy landscape, including ongoing projects, regulatory frameworks, and investment opportunities.

The conference will also present how to leverage oil and gas experiences to accelerate geothermal exploration and development. Scott Farmer, Chairman of the Geothermal Committee of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) will present the IADC Geothermal Well Classification system at the conference.

A dedicated session on geothermal project development and financing will bring together experts from national regulatory agencies such as Hungary’s Supervisory Authority of Regulatory Affairs (SARA) and financial institutions such as the European Investment Bank to discuss project development strategies, financing models, risk assessment, and investment opportunities in geothermal energy projects, offering attendees practical insights into navigating the complexities of geothermal project financing.
