EDC starts construction of 29 MW expansion at Bacman geothermal plant

Construction for the expansion of EDC's Bacman geothermal power plant officially kicks off with a virtual groundbreaking event.
Philippine-based Energy Development Corporation (EDC) will be investing P7.0 billion (~ $146 million) for a 29-MW expansion project of their Bacon-Manito (Bacman) geothermal power plant in the Bicol region. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held on June 9 and was attended by officials from the Philippine Department of Energy and other local government officials.
The Bacman expansion project will use ORC binary technology. It is one of of two geothermal projects that EDC aims to complete by 2022.
The binary expansion project will make use of waste heat from the brine produced from the 110 MW Bacman power plant. It is expected to reduce carbon-based emissions by around 72,200 tonnes each year and contribute to a total generation capacity of 215.8 GWh. The project will be executed with financial support from Japan as part of its joint credit mechanism (JCM).
EDC president and CEO Richard B. Tantoco emphasized how the Bacman expansion project will contribute to the country’s base-load renewable energy capacity while reducing its overall carbon footprint.
Company executives also noted that project construction will proceed with strict health and safety protocols, given that it will commence in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
