Geothermal Development Company (GDC) of Kenya has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for Recruitment of Members of its Geothermal Advisory Board (GAB).

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has published details on a Consultancy Opportunity for geothermal experts. The company has invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for Recruitment of Members of its Geothermal Advisory Board (GAB).

1. Background

Geothermal Development Company Limited (GDC) is a 100% government owned State Corporation operating under the Ministry of Energy. It was created as a special purpose company to accelerate the development of geothermal resources in Kenya. Its core activities include exploration, drilling, assessing and development of geothermal resources for power generation and other direct uses.

According to Vision 2030’s blueprint that aims to transform Kenya into a middle-income country by the year 2030 with an average GDP growth rate of 10% per annum over the years and according to the Government’s ‘Big Four agenda” whose key highlights include expanding the manufacturing sector, access to affordable and decent shelter, universal healthcare and food security, Infrastructure services such as electricity, transport and ICT are critical enablers of sustained economic growth and national transformation through the Vision 2030 and implementation of the Big Four Agenda placing the electricity sector at the core of the Country’s development Also, according to Least Cost Power Development Plan (LCPDP) (June 2018), total installed capacity will grow to 9,932.44MW in 2037 for fixed Medium Term Plan (MTP) case, and geothermal will be expected to contribute additional 2,647MW from the current 650 MW. GDC was formed to fast-track the development of geothermal resource and has conducted detailed surface exploration in Menengai, Baringo, Silali, Paka, Korosi, Barrier and Suswa fields/prospects and has started drilling exploration wells in Paka. In addition, GDC owns 7 deep drilling rigs and has been drilling geothermal wells in Menengai Field since 2011. Menengai Phase I power plants will be developed by Independent Power Producers (IPP) to generate 105MW from the already realised steam in the Menengai caldera. Exploration drilling outside the Menengai caldera is planned to start in 2020/2021. .

2. Objective

GDC wishes to engage six (6) experts in the following fields to the Geothermal Advisory Board (GAB):

  • (1) Business development and innovation
  • (2) Environmental management
  • (3) Reservoir engineering, reservoir management and power plant development
  • (4) Exploration and Steamfield Development
  • (5) Drilling
  • (6) Technical audit

3. Scope of Work

The experts will advise GDC on aspects of geothermal resource assessment and development including business development and finance (funding), drilling, technical audits, reservoir engineering and management, geo-scientific exploration and steam field development, environment management, power plant development and direct use applications. The experts will be required to participate in all the meetings organized by GDC in Kenya and the term of this work is two years renewable.

4. Eligibility/ evaluation requirements

The interested person shall have an academic degree/expertise from a recognized University, at least 20 years relevant professional experience and having worked in a broad variety of geographic setting and countries with high temperature geothermal fields including developing countries.

The interested person shall have no direct interest in contracts being tendered or executed by GDC or in organizations performing work or proposing to perform work for GDC.

Interested persons shall provide specific information as indicated below:

  • i) General qualifications, certification and evidence of experience in the geothermal related fields
  • ii) Work plan and methodology including contingency plan
  • iii) Consultancy experience in the region
  • iv) Evidence of registration in the expert’s professional field as necessary
  • v) Evidence of capability to transfer knowledge
  • vi) Evidence of three major clients references
  • vii) Disclosure of any current litigation, if any.

6. Submission
