"The Japanese Government and the World Bank provided financial support for the expansion on the existing project established 20 years ago with the capacity to generate 5-7 MW of electricity."

Last week ended with excellent news for Ethiopia where the Aluto Langano geothermal power plant has been reported to be officially online and it is connected to the national grid.

According to local news sources, “Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy Alemayehu Tegenu said, the Aluto Langano will play a crucial role in the second Growth and Transformation Period for Ethiopia to harness its huge geothermal potential for generating electricity. The Japanese Government and the World Bank provided financial support for the expansion on the existing project established 20 years ago with the capacity to generate 5-7 MW of electricity.”

Ethiopia has an estimated geothermal potential of 10,000MW that is still untapped. We hope that this will be the first of many plants to be developed in the African nation.
