With the required permit in place, developer Deutsche Erdwärme expects to start drilling for its Graben-Neudorf project in Southern Germany in early 2022.

German geothermal developer Deutsche Erdwärme GmbH has received approval for a drilling permit for its Graben-Neudorf project by the authorities in the Freiburg Regional Council. The drilling work in the Upper Rhine Graben is scheduled to begin in early 2022.

The company is planning two deep boreholes to use the geothermal energy from a depth of around 4,000 meters to supply electricity and local heating. The results of the preliminary investigations indicate that the waterways in the deep underground are sufficient for geothermal use.

The municipality, specialist authorities and nature conservation associations were also involved in the main operating plan of Deutsche Erdwärme GmbH, which has now been approved after a comprehensive review. The test also included possible damage from triggered earthquakes. According to the regional research center for geothermal energy involved, earthquake damage is not to be expected. In September 2020, the regional council already presented the current procedure in a public information bulletin.

The permit allows the construction of the drilling site and drilling, which is scheduled to begin in early 2022. Further permits are required for the transition to the operating phase.
