PT Geo Dipa Energi is collaborating with BRIN to collaborate on the development of modular wellhead technology for small-scale geothermal power plants.

Indonesian geothermal developer PT Geo Dipa Energi (GDE) has collaborated with the National Research and Innovation Agency (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional / BRIN) for the development of modular wellhead technology for small-scale geothermal power plants.

Ilen Kardani , Director of Commercial Development and Exploration at Geo Dipa, explains that modular wellhead technology can be applied to wells with small capacities, in the range of 2-3 MW. This allows a generator to be installed close t the wellhead, thus reducing energy loss during stream transport. The technology helps lower infrastructure costs and shortens the time needed to start generating revenues from geothermal assets.

Moreover, the electricity generation from the wellhead units can be used to meet the energy needs of nearby communities around the geothermal area.

Tata Sutardi, Head of the Energy Conversion Technology Research Center (PRTKE) at BRIN, said that BRIN has already built a small-scale geothermal power plant pilot project with the help of domestic manufacturers of turbines and generators. He said that the development of these small scale geothermal power plants now needs to be pushed towards industrialization to strengthen the domestic component industry.

ORC power plant technology has been developed by BRIN at different scales:

The Cooperation Agreement signed by BRIN and Geo Dipa was only one of three agreements recently signed between the two parties. The organizations also agreed to collaborate on research on optimizing direct use in Geothermal Working Areas, as well as research on the use of  geothermal condensate for green hydrogen production.
