Local utility Hawaii Electric Light Co. (HELCO) is soon expected to award the contract for the development of a 50 MW geothermal power project on the Big Island of Hawaii, with an estimated development cost of around $200 million.

Local news report that the contract for the development of a 50 MW geothermal power project on the big island of Hawai is soon to be awarded by the utility Hawaii Electric Light Co. (HELCO).

There are at least six companies that are said to have sent in a bid for this $200 million project, among them Huena Power (formed by Innovations Development Group, IDG), and some voices also mentioned Chevron.

Currently, the Big Island of Hawaii represents the only geothermal power plant of the state with a power generation capacity of 38 MW, a fraction of the geothermal potential for the remote islands of the volcanic group of islands in the Pacifific.

At a recent clean energy event in Honolulu, geothermal clearly was a key topic. Geothermal could provide a local energy source that also fuels other islands of the state through a transmission grid.
