Hydropower, geothermal and wind today represent 30% of Turkey’s electricity production

Turkey announces that in 2018, 30% of its electricity generated came from hydropower, wind and geothermal plants. More than 1,000 MW of geothermal power generation capacity were added and more is to come.

An article in Turkey this weekend reported that Turkey now meets around 30% of its aggregate electricity demand annually by hydropower, wind and geothermal energy, so Fatih Dönmez, Minister for Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey.

This achievement is due to the launch of 215 hydropower plants, 90 wind power plants and 46 geothermal plants. In the coming years, additional 216 hydropower plants, 180 wind power plants and 27 geothermal power plants are scheduled for construction.

With that Turkey has moved up the ranks in hydropower generation and in geothermal energy. With more than 1,000 MW in geothermal power generation capacity added over the past 5 years alone, Turkey has shown a faster growth than ever experienced in the sector before.

In 2018, 2.5% of the electricity generation in Turkey came from geothermal power plant. Investment in geothermal energy was around $1 billion in the last five years.

For geothermal energy, the sector is anxiously awaiting the final announcement of the continuation of the feed-in-tariffs, which will determine further growth of the sector. The Energy Ministry also announced that there will be tenders held for small-scale renewable energy resources zone (YEKA) in the first quarter of 2020.
