Iceland Drilling wins tender for the drilling of two wells for a geothermal project on the Caribbean island state of Montserrat, a UK overseas territory.

Icelandic geothermal drilling company Iceland Drilling has won the tender for a geothermal drilling contract on the Caribbean island state of Montserrat, a UK overseas territory.

The contract was signed on Wednesday by Vilhjálmur Gudmundsson, Head of Marketing and Business Develoment for Iceland Drilling.

The company was the only company to submit a bid to drill exploration wells for a planned geothermal project on the island. A conditional letter awarding the company was issued in late September, but contractual work was finalized and a contract signed yesterday in Montserrat.

“Iceland Drilling is hopeful that we will be able to find geothermal energy. IDC recently completed the drilling of two test wells on Dominica and will be moving its operations to Montserrat shortly to begin drilling in January 2013.”, so Vilhjalmur Gudmundsson in a statement.

Drilling is estimated to take three to four months, so Ron Beardsley, Director of the Public Work Department of Montserrat.

Two slim and production wells will be drilled to an expected depth of  1,500 meters (5,000 feet) in the island’s Exclusion Zone.

In 2012, a report by EGS of California quoted an 80% likelihood of geothermal energy utilization potential.
