Idaho Power plans to contract 20 MW geothermal power in 2012

Reported from the U.S., “Idaho Power plans to add up 150 megawatts of wind power and 20MW of geothermal energy in 2012, and another 20MW of geothermal in 2016, according to the utility’s 20-year Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) submitted to state regulators.

The utility, based in the state capital Boise, serves about 486,000 retail customers in Idaho and eastern Oregon. The customer base is expected to grow to 680,000 by 2029. About 98% of revenue now comes from Idaho.

Idaho does not have a renewable portfolio standard or other mandates to encourage alternative energy development, as it is already a major hydroelectric state. For example, hydro represented 38% of Idaho Power’s energy portfolio in 2008.

Other energy sources were coal 40%, market purchased power 14%, long-term purchased power 7%, and gas and diesel 1%.

Idaho’s regulated gas and electric utilities are required to file an IRP every two years outlining how the utilities plan to meet future demands over the next 10 to 20 years.”
