In a newly released Electricity Procurement Business Plan, the Indonesian government sets a near term goal of 725 MW geothermal power generation capacity.

Indonesia’s electricity program will still largely rely on fossil fuels in the near future, as reported by the Jakarta Post. The recently revealed Electricity Procurement Business Plan (RUPTL) has revealed that “the ambitious 35,000 megawatt (MW) program will remain overly reliant on coal and gas despite Indonesia’s commitment to decreasing carbon emissions” and renewables will only represent around 2,906 MW or 8.1% of that figure.

Of the 2,906 MW renewable energy target, consists of 725 MW geothermal power generation capacity, 180 NMW from wind power, 30 MW from biomass and 1,971 MW from hydro and micro-hydro power plants.

In 2015, more than half of electricity generation in Indonesia was fuelled by coal, 25% by gas, 8.2% by diesel, 5.9 % from hydropower and geothermal with 4%.

Today, around 8,150 MW of power generation capacity is currently under construction, with various others in different stages of development.
