The Geothermal Research Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a Modeling expert to build and strengthen reservoir engineering capabilities for potential application at the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE). FORGE is a dedicated site where researchers will be able to develop, test, and accelerate breakthroughs in enhanced geothermal system (EGS) technologies (https://www.energy.gov/eere/forge/forge-home). Advances in reservoir engineering are needed to create and maintain permeability in EGS reservoirs. Also, new technologies should leverage existing innovations from U.S. oil and gas industries.

Work will consist primarily of advancing characterizations of reservoir stimulations and the resulting flow paths from injection wells to production wells. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with academia to advance numerical simulation functionality, including modeling of discrete natural fracture networks and injector-to-producer flow paths. The position will be expected to publish relevant research outcomes in peer-reviewed scientific journals and to write proposals with partners from industry and academia to win funding opportunities and grow NREL’s Geothermal Research Group.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master’s Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience . Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines. Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong knowledge base with respect to reservoir engineering principles, theories, and concepts, including pressure transient analysis and fluid flow through fractured reservoirs.

Working knowledge of reservoir engineering modelling techniques and software platforms (Pressure Transient Analysis, Reservoir Simulation, Wellbore Simulation, Reservoir Geomechanics, etc.).

An understanding of the challenges and opportunities inherent in designing stimulations and tracer protocols. Proficiency with experimental design principles, uncertainty analysis, and basic and advanced statistical analysis methods such as machine learning.

Submission Guidelines

Please note that in order to be considered an applicant for any position at NREL you must submit an application form for each position for which you believe you are qualified. Applications are not kept on file for future positions. Please include a cover letter and resume with each position application.
