The commissioning of KenGen's Olkaria I Unit 6 geothermal power plant positions Kenya as one of the countries closest to joining the 1-GW geothermal club.

State-owned Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) CEO Rebecca Miano has announced that commissioning of the Olkaria I Unit 6 geothermal power plant has been completed and that it has now added 83 MW of electricity to the national grid of Kenya. We had previously reported on the completion of construction of Unit 6 earlier this year.

With the successful commissioning, the share of geothermal energy increases from 37.3% to 42%. It also pushes the total geothermal power generation in Kenya to 944 MW, positioning the country closer to joining the ranks of the U.S., Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey, and New Zealand in the 1-GW club.
