The President of Mexico inaugurated the 53 MW extension of the Los Azufres plant. This is the Phase 1 of the Los Azufres III project in Michoacan, Mexico.

The President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto officially inaugurated Phase 1 of the Los Azufres III plant in Michoacan, Mexico this past Friday. The president lead the ceremony of the start of operation of the $57 million project, which had up to 550 people working.

The Los Azufres III phase I plant (actually Unit 17 in Los Azufres) has a nameplate capacity of 53 MW. The net capacity is 50 MW.

With the extension the Los Azufres geothermal plant increased its capacity by 17 percent, from 192 MW to 225 MW and will generate 404 GWh of electricity, sufficient to supply power to about 800,000 people.

The plant increased by 17 percent the total installed capacity of Campo Los Azufres, going from 192 megawatts to 225 megawatts, and will generate 404 gigawatts / hour of clean electricity generation, enough to supply 800,000 inhabitants. It is part of the National Infrastructure plan to avoid carbon emissions of 177,500 tons of carbon dioxide and is expected to generate about $2.4 million in revenues to CFE.

With the inauguration of this plant, Mexico moves to 4th place in the global ranking in installed geothermal power generation capacity.
