The local municipality of Whitecourt in the province of Alberta has received a provincial grant to conduct a geothermal development feasibility study.

As reported locally, the town of Whitecourt, together with the county of Woodlands has been awarded a CAD 125,000 grant for a geothermal development feasibility study. This Alberta Community Partnership grant will support the community in exploring the potential impact of a geothermal project.

A previous study on the geothermal potential in the region for the Northern Alberta Development Council was conducted by Terrapin Geothermics. The study showed a great potential for the use of geothermal heat and power generation.

With the study it is aimed to explore how geothermal resources could be used for local industries and use of heating for buildings.
