The recent Senate Bill 1309 approved in California last weekend aims to attract the interest of Tesla Motors to build their Gigafactory in their state.

With lithium to come from geothermal wells in the Salton Sea in California, the state is seen as a good place for Tesla Motor’s planned Gigafactory for batteries. But it seems like Nevada is also a close contender. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has confirmed that the company has scouted an area near Reno, Nevada.

There is nothing certain here, but it remains that geothermal will not only be providing the required Lithium, but maybe also the power to actual run the factory for Tesla.

According to Associated Press reports, SB1309, the bill to provide incentives, never had critical terms of the deal inserted and that it was never brought up for a vote. The AP quotes lawmakers as saying that no legislative action would be taken before an agreement with Tesla is reached.

California economic development officials aren’t giving up. They issued a statement attributed to Mike Rossi, senior adviser to Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. that says, “The Administration continues to engage in productive conversations with Tesla and remains optimistic that we can reach an agreement that meets our common goal of adding jobs in California.”
