The Premier of Nevis and the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands recently discussed a cable connection via Puerto Rico that would allow utilizing power from a geothermal project on Nevis.

The high cost of electricity for their respective island states in the Caribbean, brings Nevis and the United States Virgin Islands closer together and both countries continue to discuss the possibility of an electric cable connection between the both countries.

Last week the Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry and the Governor of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), the Hon. John P. de Jongh met at the Governor’s headquarters in St. Thomas, to discuss closer functional co-operation between Nevis and the USVI.

The cable would allow the Virgin Islands to get electricity from Nevis, if – and this is a big if – it gets its geothermal project back on track. Therefore geothermal energy was a topic in those discussions.

“Negotiations are underway to have a system of underwater cables between Nevis and the United States Virgin Islands via Puerto Rico  ”, said Premier Parry.

According to the Premier, this concept has been discussed before with the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and it is backed up by the U.S State Department.

“The cost of electricity is high both in Nevis and the USVI due to the cost of rising oil prices and for this reason a regular supply of geothermal energy would be excellent for the residents of both nations,” said the Hon. Joseph Parry.”
