The Hellenic Geological & Mineral Research Authority (EAGME) in Greece is now conducting a study on the Erasmiou geothermal field near Myrodato in Northwestern Greece as part of a pilot project.

The Erasmiou geothermal field is the first in the country selected by the Hellenic Geological & Mineral Research Authority (EAGME), (former IGME) as the field of application of the pilot program funded from the NSRF and concerns the installation of recording and telecommunication stations of the data of the field.

The purpose of this program, as reported by “E” Dr. Apostolos Arvanitis, Geologist, MSc, PhD in Geothermal, Head of Department of Geothermal and Thermal Natural Resources (GEOTHE) is the constant monitoring of the field of pressure and temperature and their changes which helps to manage the field and allows landlords to cooperate with EAGME and to extract information material and data in order to drill in the right places. Mr. Arvanitis revealed that there are indications for the existence of a new geothermal field located near Myrodatos.

Regarding the installation of the two stations in the geothermal field of the new Erasmus, this was done between 1 and 8 October by a group of EAGME, consisting of Messrs. Arvanitis, Georgios Vougioukalakis, Markos Xenakis, Christos Mylonas and Polyanthi Trimi. The stations were placed in research boreholes made by I.G.M.E., while they record and transmit the level and temperature of the geothermal fluid in the exploited reservoir as well as the outlet temperature of the fluid during pumping in the drilling.

The geothermal field of Neos Erasmios – Maggana is considered as well researched with a significant number of research and productive drillings, while it is also utilized with the heating of a greenhouse unit of 185 acres, dehydration of agricultural products and underground heating of asparagus. It is noted that its further coverage is planned with the gradual installation of other continuous monitoring stations in selected and critical drilling sites. The desired results are the collection, registration in databases, processing and evaluation of primary data with the aim of rational utilization and sustainable management of this important geothermal field.

New geothermal field near Myrodato

As mentioned by Mr. Arvanitis, the area is of special interest for EAGME as it has three known geothermal fields. Apart from Erasmios, it is from Kessani but also from Therma. Apart from these, according to Mr. Arvanitis, a new geothermal field has been identified and is under investigation near Myrodato of the Municipality of Abdera. In fact, as EAGME noted, it has included it in its research program

If the research is completed and the field is confirmed, it is obvious that new roads are opened for the farmers of the area as well as for aspiring investors. Note that the higher the water temperature, the higher the energy load it has and can have chain use. As Mr. Arvanitis explained, it can be used in agriculture, animal farming, for district heating and for thermal use after it is confirmed and certified through a process and after opinions of experts for its thermal properties. Erasmus geothermal had 63 – 65 degrees but one last drilling made by the lessor of a large part of the field (Greenhouses of Thrace) were found large quantities of water 72 and 73 degrees. The field of Kessani has up to 80 degrees while the field of Therma has 52 – 53 degrees.

The program

The installation of the monitoring stations was carried out in the framework of the Energy “Temporal Monitoring of Thermal Natural Resources & Geothermal Fields of the Country” of the Sub-Project “Actions for the Rational and Sustainable Utilization of Geothermal Energy – GEOTHERM”, included in the project Industry and Entrepreneurship – OPYGEK “. This Energy is directly related to Sub-Project 1 “Management plans of Low Temperature Geothermal Fields” (DIA.GEOTH) of the Act “Upgrading the functions of the General Secretariat of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials to support the business environment and business extroversion” ( -Agreement between the Ministry of Environment and Energy and E.A.G.M.E.). Both Subprojects, “GEOTHERM” and “DIA.GEOTH.”
