A new geothermal regulatory framework has been approved guiding on research, exploitation and management of the geothermal resources in Greece.

The first important step for the development of geothermal energy and the utilization of the rich geothermal potential of Greece was completed by the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

The Ministerial Decision approving the new Regulation of Geothermal Works was published in the Government Gazette (Government Gazette B 1960) specifying the regulations of Law 4602/2019 (Government Gazette A 45) for “Research, exploitation and management of the country’s geothermal potential”.

The new Regulation of Geothermal Works incorporates innovative regulations that relate, inter alia, to the conduct of research, exploitation and management of the country’s geothermal potential, as well as to any other issue related to the rational use of resources, ensuring the health and safety of workers and environmental protection.

The drafting of the new Regulation was supervised by a Working Group consisting of officials of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, competent bodies, such as EAGME, CRES, ELGO DIMITRA, and academics of the National Technical University of Athens with significant experience in the field.
