New round to kick off for East Africa Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility GRMF Catalyst for geothermal development in East Africa

Seven developers with ten projects have qualified for full submission as part of the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility for East Africa, with a 7th round announced to kick off in June 2021.

The Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility for East Africa (GRMF) has released details on its 6th GRMF Application Round and has announced that a kick-off for the 7th round for GRM will take place approximately in June 2021.

The GRMF has been set up to encourage public and private investors as well as public private partnerships to develop geothermal prospects for power generation in East Africa by providing grants for Surface Studies and Drilling Programmes for drilling and testing of reservoir confirmation wells.

During the pre-qualification phase of the 6th GRMF Application Round, a total of 18 Expression of Interest have been received by the African Union Commission (AUC)’s Regional Geothermal Coordination Unit (RGCU).

Out of these eighteen Expression of Interest, seven developers have qualified to submit full applications for a total of ten projects. These ten projects include seven Drilling Programmes and three Surface Studies. Currently the evaluation of the full applications is ongoing.

Due to the high level of interest and participation in the  6th Application Round, the Regional Geothermal Coordination Unit (RGCU) of the African Union Commission (AUC) has decided to launch another application round in 2021.

The RGCU is pleased to inform you that the kick-off for the 7th GRMF Application Round will approximately take place in June 2021.

During the Kick-off meeting, the GRMF programme will be introduced to potential Applicants and a comprehensive overview of the whole Application procedure will be provided. Furthermore, geotechnical requirements, procurement regulations & early contracting, as well as E&S requirements will be addressed. Participants will be able to ask questions.
