Municipalities in North Holland making the transition from natural gas to geothermal heating may benefit from subsidies, research, and exchange of knowledge

The province of North Holland in the Netherlands is making available a €2-million (USD 2.3 million) funding for municipalities that wish to transition to more sustainable heating alternatives. Geothermal is one of the possible options for alternative heating that the Deputy of Climate and Energy Edward Stigter has commented as one they will be “happy to help with.” This initiative is a part of the region’s Heat Transition Vision.

The goal of the Dutch government is to have all homes in the Netherlands be free of natural gas by 2050. To achieve this, each municipality was tasked with creating their own Heat Transition Vision that outlines how natural gas will be phased out. This plan should have a realistic view of district implementation and involvement and preparation of residents.

Aside from subsidies, the province of North Holland will extend assistance to municipalities in the form of research and exchange of knowledge.
