Various environmental organizations oppose legislation that would open the Rincon de la Vieja National Park in Costa Rica to geothermal development.

As previously reported on ThinkGeoEnergy, the Costa Rican government plans to introduce legislation that would open the Rincon de la Vieja National Park for geothermal project development.

There are now a dozen environmental organizations that oppose those plans, as reported locally.

So while the current draft of a bill only refers to the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, environmentalists fear that it could be a precedent for development in other protected areas.

Recent studies confirm that geothermal potential in Costa Rica is large, and much of it can be found in protected areas in the country.
