Ambitions for the development of a geothermal heat project in Mons, Belgium have found an abrupt end through local opposition.

In the past we have been reporting on efforts on the potential development of a geothermal heat project in Mons, Belgium. It now seems that the project has been cancelled, as reported by Le Soir.

Following a public inquiry, it now seems that opposition by locals has essentially killed the project.

With hot water resources below the city estimated to be of temperature of 73 degrees Celsius at a depth of 2,500 meters, the plan had been to drill two geothermal wells in a small park.

Being close to a hospital and several schools, the project could have provided sustainable heating to the local community.
