In a ceremony this week, the President of Indonesia Joko Widodo, inaugurated three new geothermal power plants by Pertamina Geothermal in Indonesia with combined power generation capacity of 95 MW and an investment volume of around USD 500 million.

Earlier this week, the President of Indonesia, Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated three geothermal power plants by state-owned Pertamina Geothermal Energy.

The plants represent an investment of more than USD 500 million.

The plants inaugurated, include the geothermal plant of Lahendong Unit 5 and 6 with a capacity of 2 x 20 MW in Tompaso, North Sulawesi. With an investment cost of USD 245 million, construction for the project started in July 2015. The third plant inaugurated was the Ulubelu Unit 3 geothermal power plant with an installed capacity of 1 x 55 MW in Tanggamus, Lampung. The investment cost for the plant was $208 million and also started in July 2015.

Jokowi said Indonesia had vast geothermal power plant potential, which reached 29,000 MW. “Only 5 percent of the total potential has been utilized, which is still very small. The remaining 95 percent must be utilized. We are targeting to utilize 7,500 MW of our geothermal power plant potentials,” said Jokowi during the inauguration of the new power plants in Manado.

Lahendong Unit 5 was finished in September  2016, while Unit 6 was completed this month, despite an initial target of December 2016 and June 2017 respectively. The Ulubelu Unit 3 plant was scheduled to start operation in August this year, but started operations a month earlier.
