Six geothermal wells to be drilled in Izmir, Türkiye for greenhouse heating

The Izmir Provincial Directorate of Regional Development plans to drill 6 geothermal exploration wells in Dikili and Bergama in Izmir, Türkiye.

The Izmir Governorship’s Investment Monitoring and Coordination Directorate (YIKOB) of Türkiye is planning new drilling operations to meet the heating needs of the Dikili Agriculture-Based Specialized Greenhouse Organized Industrial Zone (TDIOSB) from geothermal sources .

Within the scope of the project, six geothermal exploration wells will be drilled in the area with license number 2143 (ER:3255686), located on the border of Ismetpasa Neighborhood of Dikili and Saganci Neighborhood of Bergama. Following the submission of the Project Introduction File prepared for the project to the Izmir Governorship, the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process was initiated.

The geothermal operating license held by the YIKOB, covering an area of594.49 hectares, is valid until October 2, 2040. The site has been allocated to the greenhouse organized industrial zone under a protocol signed between YIKOB and Dikili Organized Industrial Zone on December 2, 2021.

Target thermal capacity: 29.85 MWt

If economically viable geothermal fluid is reached through drilling, the resource will be utilized to meet the energy needs of the geothermal-heated greenhouses planned within the Dikili Organized Industrial Zone. The plan is to transport geothermal fluid through transmission lines to heating centers within the Organized Industrial Zone (OSB) and from there to heat greenhouse areas. This aims to reduce heating costs, which are a significant expense in greenhouse farming.

The calculation, based on production wells designated as V-8, V-9, V-12, and V-13 in the Project Introduction Document, predicts a total thermal power of 29.853658 MWt. The calculations use a temperature of 100 °C for wells V-8, V-12, and V-13, and 90 °C for well V-9. These values ??are not measured temperatures from the wells themselves, but rather values used in the project’s capacity calculations.

Drilling investment is TRY 8.5 million

The total investment cost of the project was calculated as TRY 8.5 million (approx. USD 175,500). Of this amount, try 6.12 million will be allocated to drilling operations; the remaining portion is planned to cover machinery and equipment transportation, site preparation and rehabilitation, personnel, drilling mud and waste management, wellhead safety, testing, and technical reporting.

Five of the six drilling locations are in the Ismetpasa neighborhood of Dikili, and one is in the Saganc? neighborhood of Bergama.

Drilling projects have been prepared in the same area before

Studies aimed at developing the geothermal resource in license area number 2143 have previously been subject to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes. According to the project file, a “No EIA Required” decision was issued on November 10, 2022, for 7 geothermal exploration boreholes and the use of 18.7 MWt of thermal energy in the area .

The file also states that a “Environmental Impact Assessment Not Required” decision was issued on May 23, 2025, for another project within the same license, which is defined as 6 geothermal exploration boreholes and 3,874 MWe of thermal energy utilization.

In the new application, the project is evaluated based on 6 boreholes and a thermal power capacity of 29.853658 MWt. It is stated that the project falls under the Annex-2 list of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulation, and the prepared Project Introduction File is dated August 2026.
