The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands urges the state to acknowledge the agency's right to the mineral rights on land considered for geothermal development.

Reported from Hawaii, “the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands wants the state to acknowledge the agency’s right to the mineral rights on land that’s being considered for geothermal energy development.

Honolulu Civil Beat reports that the state currently holds all mineral rights on all lands, no matter who owns them, and could potentially collect millions from future geothermal projects. Civil Beat reports that the state has collected $12 million in royalties over the past 10 years from Puna Geothermal Venture.”
