Türkiye's General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs (MAPEG) has published the 2022 Geothermal Resources Strategy Report.

The General Directorate of Mining and Petroleum Affairs (MAPEG) has published the Türkiye Geothermal Resources Strategy Report 2022, prepared by the institution.

According to the report, Geothermal energy is used directly and indirectly in Türkiye. Under indirect use, electricity is produced from geothermal fluid in geothermal power plants. In direct use, there are applications in areas such as urban heating and cooling, greenhouse heating, agricultural drying, thermal and health tourism, CO2, and dry ice production, although on a small scale.

While geothermal energy power plants are concentrated in Western Anatolia, agricultural applications are in Western and Central Anatolia; thermal tourism and urban heating applications can be seen in different regions of Türkiye. The report, taking into account the geological data obtained, provides approaches to which applications can be made in which provinces of Türkiye.

In the calculations made within the scope of this study, it was predicted that the technical potential of Türkiye would be at least 400,000 MWe. In addition, it is emphasized that geothermal energy should be mobilized in all areas in the short and long term by both the supply and demand sides, as well as the national and local governments. In the short, medium, and long term, besides the relevant sector, the private sector, universities, institutes, and research centers should prepare their strategies in this regard.

Wells have not been drilled in all of the areas determined by the studies carried out in Türkiye. It is predicted that the capacity may exceed 100,000 MWt in the medium term, with drilling research and development studies in undeveloped areas and the discovery of new fields. The 149-page final report is comprehensive and provides a detailed look at Türkiye’s geothermal energy development and future.
