Join this webinar with Valentin Goldberg, from the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) and get an insight of the challenges and chances associated with the lithium extraction from geothermal systems in Germany.

As part of the regular IGC Webinar series – a partnership of Enerchange and ThinkGeoEnergy – we are proud to host this week’s presenter Valentin Goldberg, from the KIT, who will discuss the challenges and chances of lithium extraction from geothermal systems in Germany.

After finishing his studies at the KIT with focus on geothermal energy and reservoir geology, Valentin Goldberg worked as a trainee at the EnBW between 2018 to 2019 in the analysis of hydrochemistry of geothermal brines and power plant technology. Since September 2019, he joined the KIT – department of geothermal energy. Thereby he is involved in the ongoing research project “BrineMine” as the technical project lead. The project aims to develop a sustainable and ecological process to extract raw materials from geothermal brines.

The webinar will provide an approach to assess the state of the art of extraction technologies for lithium recovery from geothermal fluids based on recent scientific studies and to identify potential challenges. Common technologies, such as liquid-liquid extraction, inorganic sorbents, electrochemical methods and membrane technologies are evaluated according to their applicability and integrability in geothermal production. Based on the technology comparison and the current state of geothermal development in Germany (and french part of Upper Rhine Graben), different scenarios for the extractable amount of lithium carbonate will be presented.
