Geothermal has been a key effort in cutting down carbon emissions from space heating in China. Learn more about the efforts in this webinar by the IGA's Asia-Western Pacific Regional Branch.

The Asia-Western Pacific Regional Branch of the International Geothermal Association is holding an interesting webinar on “Geothermal Space Heating and contributions to carbon neutrality in China” with Prof. Zhonghe Pang, He.ad of Geothermal Research Centre,  Institute of Geology and Geophysics,  Chinese Academy of Sciences,  Beijing, China.

China is rich in low to medium temperature geothermal resources suitable for space heating, especially in heavily populated eastern China where economies are concentrated. In the last 20 years or so, space heating has been industrialised with a rapid increase in development and utilisation. Recently, the total area under geothermal space heating has grown to 1.4 billion m2, about 1 m2 per capita. The plan is for an increase of 50% by 2025, and further doubled by 2035. Geothermal space heating is expected to make a significant contribution to carbon reduction in the building sector, which is estimated to account for about 20% of total CO2 emissions.
