The World Bank is releasing a Geothermal Handbook, a comprehensive guide on Planning and Financing of (Geothermal) Power Generation projects.

In combination with the upcoming geothermal gathering in Reno, Nevada at this year’s GRC Annual Meeting and GEA Geothermal Energy Expo, the World Bank is releasing its “Geothermal Handbook: Planning and Financing Power Generation”.

The Geothermal Handbook (PDF) is a comprehensive guide to planning and financing geothermal projects. Based on lessons learned from multiple investment successes and failures, the handbook presents a step-by-step understanding of the phases of geothermal project development, looking at the risks involved and at the policies, institutions and financing mechanisms needed to successfully bring projects to fruition.

The report stresses the importance of concerted international assistance to help finance geothermal scale-up in the early, risky phases of development, in order to mitigate risk and make projects attractive to private investment.

The primary authors of the handbook are Magnus Gehringer, Senior Energy Specialist, ESMAP, and Victor Loksha, Senior Energy Economist, ESMAP.

The Handbook will be presented in a presentation by Magnus Gehringer at the GRC Annual Meeting on Monday October 1, 2012.
