Baker Hughes was presented with the prestigious geothermal innovation award for their industry-first completion system that does not disrupt the production of a geothermal well.

Baker Hughes has won the 2022 Ruggero Bertani European Geothermal Innovation Award with its innovative project “Corrosion Resistant Podded Electrical Submersible Pump & Completion System.” The award was handed out during the GEOTHERM Expo 7 Congress event in Offenburg, Germany which took place on the 2nd of June.

The project, designed and developed by Baker Hughes Artificial Lift Systems and ECW Geomanagement BV (ECW) is an industry-first well completion system that allows geothermal production to continue. The completion includes an Electric Submersible Pump, deployed on production tubing, that is pressure-sealed within a pod and set with deep corrosion inhibitor injection.

A business case for the use of the completion system was presented for geothermal wells that supply heat for greenhouses. By allowing the wells to be used during completion, greenhouses can continue to have a low carbon footprint and provides the geothermal operators a well model that is more suitable to scale with market growth. This also avoids having to switch over to natural gas for heating, thus reducing carbon emissions by up to 90% in the Netherlands.

As every year, the competition was very high-level. The finalists included: Celsius Energy (France) with the project Celsius Energy System, Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Systems IEG (Germany), with the project Energy concept for geothermal cooling and heating.; Izmir Institute of Technology (Turkey) with the project Capture and using CO2 as an inhibitor in geothermal power plant.Perryman Technologies Research (France) with the project Geothermal Lithium Extraction.

The Ruggero Bertani European Geothermal Innovation Award is an initiative of the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) in collaboration with Messe Offenburg, organisers of the GeoTHERM Fair and Congress. It is given to companies which have made an outstanding contribution towards the field of geothermal energy in the form of innovative products, scientific research and project initiatives.
