Petramina Geothermal Energy (PGE) has started commissioning of the first unit of its Lumut Balai geothermal power plant in South Sumatra. With commercial operation expected to start soon, this will add 55 MW in power generation capacity, with additional 55 MW each for units 2, 3 and 4 to be operational in 2019, 2022 and 2024.

As reported by engineering group ELC Electroconsult, commissioning work has started for the 55 MW Lumut Balai Unit 1 geothermal power plant in Muara Enim, South Sumatra.

The plant has been developed by PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) and is on target to reach its Commercial Operating Date this month as indicated in late 2017. Following the operational start of unit 1, the second unit with an additional 55 MW is expected to be operational in 2019.

Since last year, PGE has run seven geothermal projects in parallel. Namely, Sungai Penuh upstream project 1×55 MW with a target of operating in 2020. Hululais upstream project is 2×55 MW with a target of operating 2019 for units 1 and 2021 units 2.

Then Ulubelu total project 2×55 MW which has been operating since July 2016 for unit 2 and June 2017 for unit 4.  Then PGE has worked on Lumut Balai Unit 1 and 2 projects with a total capacity of 2×55 MW, with COD targets for unit 1 in 2018 and 2019 for units 2. The target for Lumut Balai Unit 3 is COD 2022 and 2024 for Unit 4, with each having a 55 MW. The 30 MW Karaha geothermal plant went online earlier this year, and Lahendong Units 5 and 6 with a total capacity of 2x20MW, COD on 15 September 2016 for units 5 and 9 December 2016 for unit 6.
