Drilling for Lumut Balai 3 geothermal project in Indonesia proceeds to second well

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy has started drilling the second well as part of developing the Lumut Balai 3 geothermal power project in Indonesia.

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGEO) has started drilling of the second well, LMB-19.4, as part of the development of the Lumut Balai 3 geothermal power project in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The 55-MW Lumut Balai Unit 3 geothermal power plant has a target commercial operations date (COD) by 2030.

Drilling of LMB-19.4 shortly follows the completion of the first well, LMB-19.3, which started in July 2026. Well LMB-19.3 in Babatan Village was drilled to a depth of 2500 meters. The same rig, GDAP#123, will be used for both wells. Drilling of LMB-19.4 is expected to be completed within 40 days.

“The drilling of LMB-19.4 is a continuation of the previous success of the LMB-19.3 Well, and is proof that the development process in the field continues according to plan. We are optimistic, with the synergy of the entire team and work partners, the target of completing the drilling in 40 days can be achieved. This is one of the important stages to ensure that the Lumut Balai Unit 3 Geothermal Power Plant can operate on time,” commented Heri Susanto, Project Manager for Lumut Balai Unit 3 & 4.

Unit 2 of the Lumut Balai geothermal power plant complex came online in July 2025. Since then, expansion plans have proceeded quite quickly. Aside from drilling work ongoing for Unit 3, PGEO has also initiated exploration activities for Lumut Balai 4. Both Unit 3 and Unit 4 of Lumut Balai have received financing from international institutions, helping PGEO maintain a healthy funding structure for the company amidst an active expansion campaign.
