Work has begun on the drilling of the geothermal exploration well GT-1 near the wastewater treatment plant on Sikorskiego Street in Wrzesnia, Poland. The well will be drilled to a target depth of 1460 meters, where thermal waters at 53 – 54 ºC are expected.
The drilling work is being executed by UOS Drilling. The full scope of work also includes the conduct of hydrogeological tests and measurements, as well as an evaluation of possible uses of the geothermal resource. Work completion is to be completed by February 2027.
The total cost of the work to date has reached PLN 12.3 million, a substantial part of which has been funded by an award from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOSiGW). Wrzesnia was included in a list of seven municipalities eligible to receive funding for geothermal exploration drilling back in 2024.
The suitability of the geothermal resource for heat utilization can only be determined after drilling and testing. The municipal government states that the drilling is exploratory in nature, and that it does not necessarily mean that a geothermal facility will be installed.
Drilling contracts have also been awarded for geothermal drilling in other municipalities that have received NFOSiGW funding, including Wloclawek, Kazimierz Biskupi, and Kalisz.
