The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources confirms that exploration drilling for the geothermal project at Mt. Tampomas in West Java will convene in 2021.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in Indonesia has confirmed that drilling at Mount Tampomas geothermal working area (WKP), Sumedang Regency, West Java, is in the execution stage starting in 2021.

Geothermal Director, Harris, who represents the Director General of EBTKE, said that the optimization of geothermal potential in the location is considered feasible to meet the requirements for the development of a Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) .

Harris continued, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has met with the Sumedang Regency Government and PT Pertamina Geothermal Energi (PGE) to finalize the exploration plan.

The construction of the Tampomas PLTP is part of the accelerated development of the New and Renewable Energy (EBT) project in Indonesia.

“The selection of the location for the geothermal exploration program by the Government in the Mount Tampomas area is based on the ranking set by the Geological Agency and the Sumedang Regent’s request letter to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources,” Bumi Harris explained.

Based on the results of a study by the Geological Agency, the Mount Tampomas area has geothermal resources of 100 MW with a development plan of 55 MW.

The implementation of the Tampomas WKP program itself will be carried out in 2021 and 2022 covering socialization, coordination and processing of permits such as Environmental Management Efforts (UKL) – Environmental Monitoring Efforts (UPL), Groundwater Exploitation Permits (SIPA), location permits and so on.

“Milestone for the implementation of geothermal exploration by the government will start this year until 2025,” he said.

The Government’s geothermal exploration program aims to improve the quality of geothermal resources so as to reduce the risk of failure of developers.

“This is certainly a positive effort from the Government to support the availability of energy that comes from geothermal energy ,” Harris explained.

Harris emphasized that geothermal is expected to play a role by donating 7,241.5 MW of installed capacity in 2025. Currently, the total installed capacity is only 2,130.7 out of 4,793 MW, where West Java contributes the largest amounting to 1,193.8 MW.
