EDC is planning to complete the relocation of the Northern Negros Geothermal Plant to Nasulo, Negros Oriental by the third quarter of 2014. EDC has contracted Sumitomo of Japan for the relocation work.

The Energy Development Corp (EDC) aims to complete the relocation of its shuttered Northern Negros Geothermal Plant (NNGP) to Nasulo, Negros Oriental by the third quarter of next year and expects it to be ready for technical and commercial operation by the said period.

In an agreement signed last year, EDC tapped Sumitomo Corp of Japan for the relocation. Initial civil works, including the construction of the powerhouse, was conducted by EDC affiliate First Balfour Inc prior to Sumitomo’s contract.

Originally located in Negros Occidental, the 49-megawatt NNGP was shut down in 2011 after steam production in the project site regressed, resulting in  EDC absorbing more than P5 billion in impairment losses.

In light of this, the company opted to relocate NNGP’s electro-mechanical equipment to the 192.5-megawatt Palinpinon geothermal power complex in Negros Oriental.

Lopez-owned EDC is developing another 40 megawatts of capacity from steam production in the Nasulo and Nasuji project sites within the geothermal complex.”
